- Researchers discovered 11 million tons of rare earth elements (REEs) in U.S. coal ash, a byproduct of burning coal, offering a sustainable domestic resource.
- Coal ash simplifies rare earth extraction due to pre-existing combustion processes, reducing the need for traditional mining.
- This breakthrough could decrease reliance on foreign suppliers, strengthen U.S. supply chain independence, and support renewable energy goals.
For decades, America has relied heavily on foreign imports of rare earth elements (REEs), critical materials used in everything from smartphones to renewable energy. However, researchers have unearthed a game-changing discovery that could dramatically alter this dynamic. A massive domestic supply of these minerals has been sitting unnoticed in the United States—hidden in coal ash deposits, a byproduct of burning coal for energy. This discovery holds the potential to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and bolster the nation’s economic and technological independence.
A Treasure Hidden in Waste
Coal ash, often seen as an industrial nuisance, contains $8.4 billion worth of rare earth elements. These elements are crucial for manufacturing renewable energy components, batteries, and high-performance magnets. Researchers from The University of Texas at Austin estimate that U.S. coal ash contains 11 million tons of REEs—nearly eight times the nation’s current domestic reserves. This revelation underscores the importance of turning waste into valuable resources, providing a sustainable path forward for U.S.-based resource extraction.

Reflecting on this discovery, Bridget Scanlon, a co-lead author of the study, noted, “This really exemplifies the ‘trash to treasure’ mantra. We’re working to recover resources while reducing environmental impacts.”
Why Coal Ash Outshines Traditional Mining
Unlike traditional mining, coal ash has already undergone a key separation process during combustion, simplifying extraction. This reduces the energy-intensive refining typically required for rare earth recovery. Davin Bagdonas, a scientist at the University of Wyoming, said, “There’s huge volumes of this stuff all over the country, and the initial extraction process is already done for us.”
However, not all coal ash deposits are created equal. Coal ash from the Appalachian Basin has the highest concentration of REEs at 431 milligrams per kilogram, but only 30% can be easily recovered. Meanwhile, deposits from the Powder River Basin feature lower concentrations (264 mg/kg) but boast a higher extractability rate of 70%. These regional variations are vital for determining economic feasibility and prioritizing recovery efforts.
Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
Though promising, the road to fully utilizing coal ash for rare earth recovery is not without hurdles. Companies like Element USA are working to develop the technology and build the workforce needed for large-scale extraction. Chris Young, the company’s chief strategy officer, emphasized, “The idea of getting rare earth elements out of tailings makes sense. The challenge lies in turning that idea into a viable solution.”

The growing push for domestic rare earth recovery aligns with increasing investments in U.S. industries. This opportunity could transform coal ash from a waste product into a strategic asset for national security and economic growth.
What This Means for America’s Future
Harnessing coal ash for rare earth elements not only strengthens America’s supply chain independence but also addresses waste management challenges. The environmental and economic implications are profound. By tapping into this untapped resource, the United States can reduce reliance on adversarial nations, fortify its renewable energy ambitions, and secure a sustainable future.
