• The Trump administration’s “Department of Government Efficiency,” led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, focuses on cutting federal spending and regulations while barring Democratic activists.
  • Critics warn of transparency issues and conflicts of interest due to Musk and Ramaswamy’s business ties.
  • Calls for bipartisan oversight have been dismissed, raising concerns about accountability.

The Trump administration’s “Department of Government Efficiency,” led by tech mogul Elon Musk and conservative entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, is making waves as it pushes for deep cuts in federal spending and regulations. However, the team has firmly rejected requests from two prominent Democratic activists to join the initiative, signaling a clear partisan divide in its mission.

Democrats Denied Entry to Cost-Cutting Team

On Thursday, Norman Eisen, a former White House ethics official under Barack Obama, and Virginia Canter, an attorney who worked for both Presidents Obama and Clinton, requested to join what they called the “so-called Department of Government Efficiency.” In their letter to Musk and Ramaswamy, they argued their appointment would help ensure transparency and guard against conflicts of interest. However, the Trump transition team swiftly declined the request.

“President Trump’s Truth made clear we have no room in our administration for Democrats,” said Katie Miller, a Trump spokeswoman, in an email to The New York Times. She referenced a post by the president-elect on Truth Social, which excluded individuals suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome” from serving in his administration.

Eisen and Canter are co-founders of the State Democracy Defenders Fund, a nonprofit group keeping tabs on the cost-cutting effort, nicknamed DOGE after the popular internet meme. They believe their involvement could help the initiative comply with the Federal Advisory Committee Act, a 1972 law requiring advisory committees to maintain balanced representation of viewpoints.

Earlier, their nonprofit submitted public-records requests to federal agencies, seeking details about interactions with Musk and Ramaswamy’s team. They emphasized that their appointment could offer “in-house watchdogs,” ensuring the cost-cutting project avoids ethical violations.

Trump’s Team Stands Firm

Despite the push for oversight, the Trump administration remains steadfast. The Department of Government Efficiency has been hiring tech executives and conservative activists to identify regulations and spending programs to slash. Trump has promised these efforts will lead to major savings and reforms, though the department only has the authority to make recommendations to Congress.

The rejection of Democratic activists underscores Trump’s broader strategy of excluding critics from his administration. While his Truth Social post did not explicitly name Democrats, it included a blanket prohibition against individuals who have openly criticized him, including former Republican allies.

Critics, including Eisen and Canter, have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest within DOGE. Both Musk and Ramaswamy have extensive business holdings that could financially benefit from shifts in federal policies. For example, Musk’s ventures often rely on federal contracts, while Ramaswamy’s business portfolio could be impacted by deregulation.

Public Citizen, another watchdog group, made a similar request for inclusion earlier this week. However, their co-president, Lisa Gilbert, confirmed that their request has also been ignored so far.

What’s Next for DOGE?

As the Department of Government Efficiency continues its work, questions about transparency and accountability remain. While Trump has heralded the initiative as a path toward drastic reforms, its exclusionary stance raises debate about who gets a seat at the table.
